Breadcrumbs are often an essential part of a site’s navigation with its clear visual display that shows your relative position and path to arrive at the current page. A website’s site-map and structure can be difficult to understand when you can’t see it and this allows the user to navigate up and down the current folders in similar fashion to the computer operating system method.
A large complicated application with granular levels, for example a retail site with many categories and products for sale, can often be best represented with a thumbnail system so that customers can find their way around. Smaller sites will not always need this extra help as they’ll usually be happy to explore using the top and side navigation.
